MY LIFE AS A ZUCCHINI

Directed By CLAUDE BARRAS

“Claude Barras’ Oscar-nominated stop-motion animated feature is as poignant and as well observed a film about the darker side of childhood as you could ever hope to see.” – The Wall Street Journal

A family-friendly staple of the international film festival scene comes to Brisbane in all its subtle and heartwarming animated beauty. Zucchini is a 9-year old boy living alone with his mother until, after an unfortunate incident, he is placed in an orphanage. Despite this frightening and unsettling turn of events, Zucchini takes it all in his stride and a deep bond emerges between him and the policeman assigned as his case officer. In the orphanage are a few children Zucchini’s age, all dealing with their situation in their own innocent ways. Until the arrival of new girl Camille, whose freshness and novelty in this strange and daunting place sparks a special bond with Zucchini. My Life as a Zucchini is a surprisingly mature work for young audiences. The treatment is so naive and innocent that you can’t help but fall in love with almost each and every character – child and adult. Claude Barras’ lovely animation is simple, warm and a pleasure to watch in a lovely film that’s a fabulous introduction to international cinema for newcomers. Just what the doctor ordered.
