“Jasper’s dynamic debut crackles with energy and grass roots authenticity.” – The Hollywood Reporter
One of the buzz films from this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Patti Cake$ is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.
Patti Cake$, aka Killa P, aka a lot of other names – real name Patricia Dombrowski (Danielle Macdonald) – dreams of making it as a rapper, but things are stacked against her. She’s on the wrong side of the tracks. Her mother is a boozy barfly whose past career as a rock star still haunts both of them – and Patti is doing everything she can to keep the debt collecting wolves from the door.
Along with her best friend Jheri, Patti encounters a bizarre hard rock/rap dark spirit named Bastard on an open mic night and quickly becomes fascinated with this outsider, who lives in a shack on the outskirts of town recording his own special brand of musical weirdness.
Along with Patti’s grandmother (don’t ask!), together a strange magic develops between this group of outsiders as the film twists and turns from raw drama to laugh-out-loud comedy.
Patti Cake$ is a genuinely honest film with finely drawn characters, each of whom you’ll be utterly happy to follow, cry with, love with, cheer with and fight with.
