“Constructed like an eerie, metaphorical thriller, this tense, riveting character study offers viewers nearly two hours of emotions with a stunning pay-off no one will be expecting.” – Variety
In the wilds of Russia, brothers Andrey and Ivan have been raised by their mother. Only a faded photograph in the attic reminds them that they had a father – a man who disappeared when they were infants. When their laconic father returns after twelve years of absence, Andrey, the elder, is delighted – but younger brother Ivan is suspicious. The trio celebrate their reunion by leaving on a fishing trip to a remote island on a lake, which quickly turns from grand adventure to nightmare. It is clear no one is coming home from this trip unchanged.
Andrey Zvyagintsev’s visually stunning debut feature is an ominous, gut-wrenching, deeply emotional study of familial conflict and the powerful bonds between fathers and sons.
